How many drops of CBD oil should I take? It’s one of the most frequently asked questions about CBD. So what’s the answer? Well, it depends on two key factors: your daily dosage and the strength of your CBD oil.

CBD is a food supplement rather than a medication, and as a result, it has no standard recommended dosage. It also affects everyone differently, so various individual factors affect dosage, including body weight and reasons for use.

So how do you find your optimal daily dosage? And which CBD oil strength is right for you? Read on to find out.

CBD oil is a popular wellness supplement, consisting of CBD (cannabidiol) and a carrier oil. There are three main types of CBD oil: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate.

Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD oil both contain various compounds that are found in the cannabis plant, including cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenes. But the key difference between them is that full-spectrum can contain higher levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the controlled, intoxicating cannabinoid. For this reason, full-spectrum CBD is illegal in the UK and other countries around the world.

CBD isolate is the least common form of CBD oil, consisting of just CBD and no other cannabis compounds. It is CBD in its purest form, but due to the absence of other compounds, it doesn’t offer the added potential benefits of the entourage effect.

At Naturecan, our CBD oil is a broad-spectrum distillate sourced from organic US-grown hemp. It has non-detectable levels of THC (<0.01%) and uses an organic MCT carrier oil derived from coconut.

How do I take CBD oil?

Sublingual administration is the most common and efficient way to take CBD oil. By administering the drops under the tongue, CBD is absorbed directly into the bloodstream and bypasses the digestive system, allowing it to take effect within just 30 minutes.

To take CBD oil, stand in front of a mirror with your bottle of CBD oil, then squeeze the rubber top of the pipette and open the bottle. Place the correct number of drops under your tongue (according to your daily dosage) and hold the oil there for one or two minutes before swallowing. This gives the CBD time to be absorbed by the blood vessels under the tongue.

You can also take CBD oil by adding it to drinks and foods. For example, Naturecan has created three CBD-infused smoothie recipes which are a fresh and easy way to add CBD into your daily routine. However, it’s worth noting that CBD oil ingested in food or drink will take longer to have an effect than CBD oil taken under the tongue, because it has to be digested before entering the bloodstream.

How many drops of CBD oil should I take?

Step #1: Dosage

There are three steps to calculating how many drops you should take. The first is finding your optimal daily dosage.

There are two ways of doing this. One is to start with a low daily dose and increase this gradually over several days until you find a dosage that works for you. We recommend starting with a dose of around 20mg, or you can take the number of drops recommended on the product label.

The other way to find your daily dosage is to use our CBD Oil Dosage Calculator. Just answer five simple questions and we’ll recommend a dose that’s tailored to you and your needs in less than one minute.

Step #2: Oil strength

Once you’ve found your daily dosage, the next step is to choose the strength of CBD oil that best suits your needs. Different oil strengths contain different amounts of CBD per drop, so the strength you use will affect how many drops you take.

If you are new to CBD or have a low daily dosage (e.g. under 30mg), then low strength oils (5%, 10% or 15%) will be more suitable for you. On the other hand, if you have a higher daily dosage (e.g. 50-70mg), then higher strength oils (20%, 30% or 40%) will be better value for money and you will need fewer drops to reach your dosage.

As this table shows, stronger oils are more expensive than weaker oils, but their price per drop is lower, so they are less expensive in the long-run.

It’s worth noting that finding the right CBD oil strength is not as important as taking the right number of drops. This is because most dosages can be reached using any strength of oil – except for very low dosages, which may be too small to administer with high strength oils due to the higher CBD concentration per drop.

If you have a daily dose of 60mg, for example, you can reach this with a low, medium or high strength oil, but you will just have to administer a different number of drops depending on which strength you use.

Step #3: Drops

Once you have found your daily dosage and settled on which strength to use, the last step is to translate your dosage into the correct number of drops. To do this, simply use this table to find the CBD concentration per drop of your chosen oil strength, and then divide your daily dosage by that number.

For example, if you’ve chosen to use the 10% CBD oil, you can see that this contains approximately 4mg CBD per drop. If your daily dosage is 40mg, divide 40 by 4 and you get 10 – so you would need to take 10 drops of 10% CBD oil to reach your daily dosage.

When you’ve figured out how many drops of CBD oil to take, you’re ready to incorporate CBD into your daily routine. Just remember that patience and consistency are key: CBD accumulates in the body over time, so the longer you use it, the more likely you are to feel its effects.

If you don’t notice any effects at all after using your new dosage for three or four days, you may want to increase it by one or two drops. You can keep doing this every three days until you find your sweet spot, while staying under the UK Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) recommended daily limit of 70mg.

After a few weeks or months, you may find that your daily dosage is much higher than it was when you started. At this stage, it may be a good idea to switch to a stronger oil in order to save money and reduce the number of drops you need to take.

Can you overdose on CBD?

Another common question related to dosage is “Can you take too much CBD?”. The short answer is yes, but what constitutes too much will differ for each person, because some people have a higher tolerance than others.

While taking high doses which exceed the recommended daily limit is unlikely to have serious consequences, it may cause unpleasant side effects, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Some studies have shown doses of up to 1,500mg to be well-tolerated, but the tolerance threshold differs from person to person. Moreover, for most people it’s simply not necessary to take such extremely high doses in order to reap the full potential benefits of CBD.

By finding a dosage that’s tailored to you and your needs, you can get the most out of CBD and save money by not using more than you need.

How often should I take CBD oil?

There is no standard advice on how often to take CBD oil. It all comes down to personal preference. To find what works best for you, you can experiment by altering the frequency with which you take CBD. For example, you could start by taking your daily dose once a day for a week, and the next week take half your dose in the morning and the other half in the evening.

Takeaway

To sum up, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the question “How many drops of CBD oil should I take?” It depends on your daily dosage and the strength of your CBD oil.

You can find a daily dosage that’s tailored to your needs by taking the experimental “start low, go slow” approach, or by using our CBD Oil Dosage Calculator. You can then use your daily dosage to find a suitable oil strength.

Once you’ve settled on dosage and oil strength, remember that patience and consistency are key to getting the most out of CBD, and make sure you don’t exceed the maximum recommended dosage.Explore Naturecan’s range of high quality broad-spectrum CBD oils, available in six different strengths, and find the one that’s right for you.
